Abstract:

Working as a music therapist across different cultures is a beautiful way to relate to people from all around the world. But it also brings in some challenges.

In this presentation, we will talk about the clinical experiences of music therapy for Turkey-to-Netherlands migrants and natives of Turkey. Specifically, we will discuss music therapy as a form of evidence-based intervention for people with dementia, the role of the music therapist in working with migrants and refugees, and music therapy experiences at children’s hospitals. Some experiences are very funny, and some are enriching.

Music therapists don’t only provide clinical services but also conduct research. In the last part of the talk the international research project MIDDEL “Music Interventions for Dementia and Depression in Elderly care homes” will be presented.

Short Biography of the Speaker:

Yeşim Saltık is a music therapist and entrepreneur of Dutch-Turkish origin living in the Netherlands. In 2018 she completed her music therapy Bachelor’s degree and graduated from the ArtEZ University of Arts Enschede.

During her studies, she volunteered for ‘Connect by Music’ in Greece and started working with children and young refugees at the refugee center in Almelo. Right after her graduation she also started to work in several care homes in the Netherlands. Having noticed the need for access to music therapy by Turkish migrants, upon her graduation, she published a book titled ‘Müzik Ruhun Gıdasıdır’ in Dutch.

As an entrepreneur, she is taking part in different projects, workshops, and concerts.

Currently, she is living in Ankara, involved in the international project MIDDEL, and occasionally teaches at the ArtEZ University of Arts Enschede.
