Prof. Mehmet Burçin Ünlü received his bachelor's degree from the Physics Department of Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1996 and his master's degree from the Physics Department of Boğaziçi University in 1998. He obtained his PhD from Stevens Institute of Technology in 2004. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher for five years at the Tu & Yuen Functional Onco-Imaging Laboratory (Department of Radiological Sciences, School of Medicine) at the University of California, Irvine. During his postdoctoral studies, he focused on medical imaging and medical physics. He served as a faculty member in the Physics Department of Boğaziçi University between 2009-2023, and as the department chair between 2018-2020 and 2022-2023.

In 2017-2018, he worked for a year at the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Biomedical Physics at Stanford University with the support of a Fulbright scholarship. Additionally, he worked on proton therapy research for six months at Hokkaido University School of Medicine. He maintains an ongoing collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Medicine at Hokkaido University.

Prof. Mehmet Burçin Ünlü relocated the Medical and Biological Physics Laboratory, which he established at Boğaziçi University in 2012, to the Faculty of Engineering at Özyeğin University in 2023. He currently also serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Aviation and Space Sciences.

His areas of expertise include medical and biomedical physics, medical imaging, image reconstruction algorithms, biological physics, and computational cancer biology.

In the seminar class, Prof. Mehmet Burçin Ünlü will present on “Physics for Chefs and Quantum Science in the Kitchen”.
