Özgün Ekici, doktora derecesini 2011 yılında Carnegie Mellon Üniversitesi'nde Ekonomi alanında tamamlamıştır. Ayrıca, Bilkent Üniversitesi'nden Endüstri Mühendisliği alanında Lisans derecesine (2003), Humboldt Üniversitesi'nden Ekonomi ve Yönetim Bilimleri alanında Yüksek Lisans derecesine (2005) ve Carnegie Mellon Üniversitesi'nden Ekonomi alanında Yüksek Lisans derecesine (2007) sahiptir.

Dr. Ekici'nin araştırmaları öncelikle Eşleştirme Teorisi, Mekanizma Tasarımı ve Piyasa Tasarımı alanlarına odaklanmaktadır. Böbrek hastalarına böbrek tahsisi ve devlet okullarındaki öğrencilere kota tahsisi gibi geniş bir uygulama yelpazesine sahip eşleştirme algoritmaları geliştirme konusunda uzmanlaşmıştır. Yenilikçi çalışmaları, Theoretical Economics, Games and Economic Behavior, Journal of Mathematical Economics, International Journal of Game Theory ve Economics Letters gibi prestijli dergilerde yayımlanmıştır. Katkıları, ekonominin alanını ve gerçek dünya senaryolarındaki pratik uygulamalarını ilerletmeye devam etmektedir.
