Özyeğin University Earns International Recognition for its Research Culture Extending to High School Students.
High school research programs at Özyeğin University, led by Prof. Burçin Ünlü, continue to earn significant international recognition through the success of their student researchers. At the APS Global Physics Summit (APS March Meeting 2026), held March 16–20, 2026, in Denver, Colorado, our student researchers Ahmet Asım Önce from Galatasaray High School and Alp Mete Mutlu from TEV İnanç High School were awarded First Prize for Best Poster in the Division of Biological Physics (DBIO), in recognition of their outstanding performance. In a competition where participants from leading institutions such as MIT and the University of Richmond placed second and third, respectively, this achievement stands as a testament to the exceptional caliber of our student researchers.
The award-winning project, “The Physics of Nanocell Drug Kinetics in Combined Glioblastoma Therapy,” was developed and led by Dr. Defne Yılmaz from the Faculty of Engineering. The research investigates the biophysical mechanisms governing drug transport, distribution, and therapeutic efficacy within the tumor microenvironment, employing physics-based mathematical and computational modeling approaches. By analyzing the effects of nanocell-based combination therapies on drug kinetics, the study offers valuable insights into improving the understanding of glioblastoma treatment and identifying potential optimization strategies.
Reflecting on the University’s research philosophy, Prof. Burçin Ünlü emphasized the importance of engaging students in scientific research from high school years:
“Encouraging scientific curiosity early in life is of paramount importance. Providing students with opportunities to experience the research process, learn how to ask meaningful questions, and develop interdisciplinary thinking skills plays a critical role in cultivating the scientists of tomorrow. International achievements such as this serve as a powerful testimony of not only the strength but also the sustained growth of Özyeğin University’s research culture.”
Through its high school research programs, Özyeğin University offers students the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and researchers, gain hands-on laboratory experience, and participate directly in the processes of scientific discovery. This vibrant research environment fosters early engagement with scientific thinking while building a strong foundation for future academic studies that achieve international recognition.
The distinction earned at the APS Global Physics Summit stands as a significant milestone, further strengthening Özyeğin University’s global standing in biophysics, computational modeling, and interdisciplinary health research.
