Looking into the Climate Trauma from the Gender Lens | Sustainability Talk Announcement
In our next Sustainability Talk “Looking into the Climate Trauma from the Gender Lens”, we will welcome Deniz Gündoğan İbrişim, a Marie Curie Fellow at Sabanci University within the Gender and Women's Studies Center of Excellence whose research interests are centered on gender studies, as our guest speaker.
The Anthropocene is one of the most controversial concepts in both cultural studies and literary criticism today, the possibilities and limits of which we are still trying to fathom. Looking for ways to represent or voice the ecological extinction and global climate crisis that we all have been witnessing especially since the second half of the 20th century makes the Anthropocene visible both as an era and an analytical category. Drawing from the definition of the term Anthropocene, and initial scenarios, we will talk about a different form of violence and trauma that this term suggests: “climate violence” and “climate trauma”. As we discuss climate violence and climate trauma, whose progress, in most cases, is not so ostentatious, evident, or sudden, and the forms of grief and mourning they herald, we will also address its urgency within the framework of sustainability. Above all, we will highlight the fact that we cannot talk about a climate trauma that is free from all discrimination based on socio-economic status, geographic location, class, ethnicity, or gender, and we will look at climate trauma from the perspective of gender.
