Title: Coordinated versus Independent Fundraising
Abstract: We use “real donation” lab experiments to compare independent fundraising where donation requests from different charities arrive sequentially to potential donors, with coordinated fundraising where donation requests arrive simultaneously. We find that coordinated fundraising outperforms independent fundraising in terms of donations generated. Two additional treatments unpack the effects of uncertainty about the number of charity requests and uncertainty about the identity of the charities. We show that uncertainty about the number of requests affects the pattern of giving, with lower contributions for later decisions under sequential than under simultaneous requests. However, uncertainty about the identity of the charities has a significant impact on the overall level of giving even when the number of requests is known. In a second phase, all subjects have a surprise opportunity to revise their donations to all charities, which are presented simultaneously. In this phase, subjects in all treatments increase donations, but the amount of update is the highest under independent fundraising. However, the gap between independent and collaborative fundraising persists even after updates.
