Workshop: Heat Islands To Synthetic Gardens
Urban heat islands are a significant component in producing the negative effects of climate change. Urban gardens and creeks are a source of ecological
and social resilience.
On day 1 our workshop will focus on learning.
• what are heat islands?
• where are urban heat islands are located in İstanbul?
• what makes these areas into heat islands?
• what is resilience?
• where were urban gardens and creeks located in İstanbul?
• why and how did they create resilience?
• how can architects propose scenarios for improving the city’s resilience based on thisknowledge.On day 2-4 our workshop will focus on designing.Using Maya and Filter Forge the students will be guided through a design process resulting in alternative urbanpatches to to turn heat islands into synthetic gardens. On day 5 there will be a review, discussion and evaluation of the students’ work. Students will be asked to participate in this activity not only by presenting their own work, but also by discussing their fellow students' work.
