Title: Integrated Liner Ship Scheduling and Container Routing Problem with Transit Time Sensitive Demand

Abstract:
Due to low transportation costs, a majority of the global cargo is containerized and shipped by sea. Liner shipping companies offer regularly scheduled services that move customer containers between ports over a complex network.  In this increasingly competitive market, transit times offered to customers is a critical factor that impact both shipment demand and unit revenue. In this article, we focus on the liner ship scheduling and cargo routing problem (LSSCRP), which simultaneously constructs the liner ship schedule and routes the container demand using the services in this schedule.  In order to account for the impact of transit times, we propose a mixed integer programming model for LSSCRP, which assumes that both the customer demand and the unit revenue is sensitive to the transit time offered to the customer.  Due to the high computational complexity of LSSCRP, we propose a novel matheuristic that integrates a mathematical model for container routing within a variable neighborhood search metaheuristic. Using data sets from the literature, we demonstrate that the matheuristic is capable of producing high quality solutions within reasonable computation time. Our computational experiments also illustrate the importance of considering transit times at the tactical level during the liner ship scheduling process. Our results indicate that publishing customer friendly schedules with short transit times can provide a competitive edge that improves both customer satisfaction and company profitability.
